Philosophy of Collection Management

Collection management is an important part of library service. It is one way that librarians uphold the library's mission, values, and policies.

Quality collections should reflect popular interests and the community in which they reside, as well as reflect a variety of information, ideas, and experiences. Collections should support informational, educational, and entertainment-based needs of patrons while being accessible, timely, and diverse.

It is the duty of library staff to support access to diverse content and to work beyond their own personal points of view and inherent biases during the evaluation, selection, maintenance, and     de-accessioning processes. It is also the duty of library staff to be familiar with their collections in order to identify knowledge gaps and/or areas to prioritize.
